University of Groningen has appointed Valérie van ’t Lam Professor by Special Appointment for the Environmental Law chair as from 1 August 2025. As holder of the chair, Valérie will focus on the effectiveness of current public and environmental law instruments.

As a functional area of law, environmental law today focuses on the transition to a carbon-neutral and ecologically sustainable society and is therefore highly relevant to a wide range of policy areas and legal fields. For example, environmental law and its influence are increasingly reflected in Dutch, international and European corporate, private and criminal law.

Valérie will explore what this interconnectedness means for the effectiveness of current public and environmental law instruments. For several actors: for government that uses the instruments of environmental law to achieve policy goals, for market actors that require a legally certain business environment and for citizens that rely on a healthy environment.

Thanks to her academic background and extensive practical experience of environmental law matters for a variety of clients, as well as to her close collaboration with experts in corporate, liability and criminal law, Valérie is perfectly positioned to bridge the gap between policy, science and practice.

Hans Witteveen, managing partner Stibbe Amsterdam:

“We are proud that Valérie has been appointed Professor by Special Appointment at the University of Groningen. Given her experience and her unique perspective on the subject, she is ideally positioned to connect environmental law with other areas of law. We wish her every success.”

Valérie is partner in Stibbe’s Environment & Planning practice group, specialising in environmental law, climate change, environmental impact, ESG and supervision and enforcement. She advises and litigates on behalf of clients in both private and public sectors, and has extensive experience with market actors in industry, production, transport, mobility, energy, utilities and real estate. She has a master’s degree in Dutch private and administrative law and a PhD in environmental law from Utrecht University.
