Frans-Joseph is Stibbe’s ESG specialist, working firm-wide and as part of our multidisciplinary ESG and Sustainability Focus Group. His current focus is on international supply chains and due diligence legislation.
Frans-Joseph Biermans
He has experience in monitoring legal, political and geopolitical developments, advising on supply chain due diligence obligations, and consulting on cross-border human rights issues - including, prior to joining Stibbe, work on female genital mutilation and the international rights of detainees. His academic work includes a thesis on differing interpretations of the humanitarian law concept of direct participation in hostilities.
Frans-Joseph has a special interest in business & human rights, particularly the indirect effect of soft-law instruments and public international law on companies, and how these risks can be effectively managed.
He holds a Masters of Law (LL.M) in Public International Law from the University of Amsterdam.
