On 17 December 2021, the European Commission published its final version of the implementing decision on the adequate protection of personal data in the Republic of Korea.
In a previous news published on 7 October 2021, we indicated that the EDPB had given a positive opinion (opinion 32/2021) on the draft decision of the European Commission (EC) on the adequate protection of personal data in the Republic of Korea.
On 17 December 2021, the EC published its final version of the implementing decision (see here). South Korea is now a member of a select club of 15 States that offer adequate protection of personal data by European standards (see the full list here). As mentioned in a Joint Press Statement published on 17 December 2021(see here), “[b]ased on the decision, personal data will be able to travel safely from the EU to the Republic of Korea to the benefit of citizens and economies on both sides, without any need for further authorisations or additional tools”.
