Alongside other pro bono efforts from law firms across the world – amongst Mayer Brown – Stibbe has contributed to a multi-jurisdictional report looking at challenges to the independence of the judiciary throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The need to protect the independence of the judiciary is a key pillar in upholding the rule of law for any country. This is ever more important during times of crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has created new and emerging challenges for the delivery of, and access to, justice all around the world. Some countries have embraced new technologies and found innovative ways to rise to the challenge, while others have struggled to tackle a growing backlog of cases and seen justice systems grind almost to a halt.

The report has been prepared for the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, and supports the UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers. The report includes findings and analysis across 18 countries, including the Netherlands, and four US states.
