Phinney focuses on non-standard labour relations (flexible labour), complex remuneration questions and on corporate employment law such as transfer of undertaking, employee participation and collective labour law. 

Phinney has a master's in law from Leiden University (2014) and bachelor’s degree in Law, Leiden University (2013). He attended the Stibbe MBA Highlights Programme at INSEAD (2020).

Phinney regularly publishes in professional journals on different employment law topics.
