Roundtable on smart contracts and its legal challenges

21.11.2019 EU law

On the 21 November 2019, in our Brussels office, our TMT departement organizes a round table on smart contracts and its legal challenges. Can smart contracts truly live up to the expectations? Which challenges will we be facing while drafting and implementing smart contracts?

Smart contracts, building upon the blockchain distributed ledger technology, hold many promises. They allegedly eliminate the need for human management and reduce the risk, not only by translating the rules and obligations between the parties into code, but also by automatically enforcing those rules and obligations.

Smart contracts, being self-verifying, self-executing and autonomous, are expected to become more widespread in the future in all types of sectors.

But can smart contracts truly live up to these expectations? Which challenges will we be facing while drafting and implementing smart contracts?

During this roundtable debate, Carolien Michielsen, junior associate in our TMT team and data protection and privacy specialist, will introduce you to the concept of smart contracts and discuss the related legal implications.

Erik Valgaeren, partner at Stibbe Brussels and head of our TMT team, and several of our TMT team members will be present also to share with you their own experiences in matters we handle on a day-to-day basis.

Join us for this roundtable on Thursday, 21 November, at noon, in our offices, located opposite Brussels' Central trainstation.

Registration is free of charge. Please send an e-mail to events@stibbe.com. To ensure that the session will be conducted most effectively, we limit attendance to one person per company.

Programme:

12.00: registration and lunch

12.15: start of the roundtable

14.00: lunch
