Dutch Government announces termination of natural gas extraction in Groningen

Short Reads - In a letter to the Dutch House of Representatives dated 29 March 2018, Minister Wiebes of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate announced that natural gas extraction from the Groningen gas field will be terminated entirely in the coming years. No later than 2022 and possibly one year sooner, the natural gas extraction level will be reduced to below 12 billion Nm3. In subsequent years, it will gradually be reduced to zero.

Short Reads - Legislative background On 22 December 2015, the Dutch Senate rejected the legislative proposal "STROOM", which included provisions to effectuate the Dutch Energy Agreement (Energieakkoord), by the narrowest of margins. Subsequently, a substantively similar legislative proposal, the Energy Transition Act (wet VET) was tabled and then shelved, as it was declared "controversial" by the Dutch House of Representatives, meaning that debate on the proposal was postponed until the new Dutch government was in office.

Dutch offshore wind roadmap 2024-2030

Short Reads - The Dutch government has announced plans to realise new wind farms in the North Sea with a total additional capacity of 7 GW during the period 2024 to 2030. In addition to the 4.5 GW which will be installed up to and including 2023, this would increase the total installed capacity of offshore wind farms in the Dutch North Sea to 11.5 GW in 2030.
